It’s always a pleasure to see a new movie from Phil Overman Rice, whether he’s making it in Moviestorm or playing with GTA, Mass Effect, or anything else. He’s undoubtedly one of the leading talents working in machinima anywhere in the world, and probably the best of the amateur machinimators. His portfolio of films is quite unbelievable, especially when you take into account that for years he ran the Overcast podcast, and is also involved in many different machinima festivals and sites as well as having a full-time job and a family in South Florida. Somehow he manages to combine all this with a larger output of films than just about anybody else in the field, and has garnered a slew of well-deserved awards as a result.
Most of his work is comedy, such as the hilarious Male Restroom Etiquette, the most watched machinima of all time. (Yes, eclipsing even such machinima classics as Red vs Blue and The Internet is for Porn.) His new film, however, is a rare view into Phil’s darker side, previously seen in Apology.
Thy Neigbor showcases mods from Moviestorm stalwarts AngriBuddhist, Bongoman, and DavidWWW all of which are available through Machinimods. It also makes great use of music from the new Bob and Barn packs, available through the Marketplace. Despite being understated throughout, the music creates the atmosphere on which the entire piece depends, and shows the versatility of these packs. It’s also a testament to Phil’s standing in the machinima community that the voice is provided by Dulci, one of the champions of iClone - there’s no competition between proponents of different tools at this level, just a love of creating great movies.
It’s also noteworthy in that it makes use of a clip from Bloodspell, the feature-length machinima from Strange Company, which our very own Ben Sanders and Johnnie Ingram both worked on. Bloodspell was released under Creative Commons, and it’s heartening to see someone make use of this creative freedom to incorporate machinima in other machinima.
