Innovation in Animation competition

Imagine and FMX have announced the launch of their “Innovation in Animation” competition.  They are searching for work that explores animation as an art form, pushing the boundaries on expected conventions.  Whether it’s an experimental technique or an unconventional subject matter, any style of animation is allowed.  The finalists will have the privilege of seeing their work screened each day at fmx/09 in front of thousands of influential animation professionals.  The winning animator will also receive two full passes to the festival.  For further details and how to enter please click here.  (Site registration required.)

Hurry - the competition deadline is 20th April 2009.

This would seem to be a good opportunity to showcase machinima - give it a shot!

Ivy Film Festival

This just in via Harrison Heller and Overman:

The 2nd annual Ivy Film Festival Machinima Competition at is currently accepting student machinima entries. The Ivy Film Festival is the largest student film festival in the United States held on the campus of Brown University every April.  All machinima films submitted to the festival must have been completed while the filmmaker was enrolled in a high school, college, or graduate school (but they can be from any year). We are accepting films made in any game engine. You may submit up to 3 films, but no game cinematics please. Online voting will whittle down the competition to a top 10 films and determine the winner of the “Audience Choice Award.” A panel of machinima, animation, and New Media experts will judge the top ten films and select the winner of the “Jury Prize.” The winning films will be screened at the Ivy Film Festival and both winners will receive a cash prize. The deadline is March 27th, so please submit your films as soon as you can!!  For more information visit:

Good luck to anyone who enters, whatever machinima tools you use!

Seventeen Moviestorm packs for £99!

The Moviestorm 2008 Bundle includes every single one of the seventeen content packs we released last year: that’s Law & Order, Happy Holidays, Garden Features, Halloween, Foliage, US Election, two Wardrobe packs, Song Contest, Sci-Fi, Bedroom Blog, Open Mic, Dance Music, Rock & Indie Music, Bedrooms, Lounges and the Coffee Shop.  Packs include customisable costumes, animations, props, sounds and customisable stock sets.

We’re offering this incredible bundle, worth nearly £130 ($183/€145*), for the unbelievably low price of just £99 ($138/€110).

If you think about it for a minute, that’s less than £6 ($8.20/€6.50) per pack.  Just one of the wardrobe packs contains 28 individual costumes - so that works out at the stunning price of a mere 21 pence (29c/23c) per costume.  Not bad, eh?

Interview with Lucinda

Lucinda McNary, based in Kansas City, is now retired, and has had enormous success getting her machinima movies distributed on television and elsewhere. She majored in Biology and Psychology and worked most of her life as a secretary.  We spoke to her a couple of weeks ago about her approach to making films and how she’s gone about taking them to a wider audience, and eventually becoming a professional film-maker through machinima.  Read the full interview here.
